South Asia Regional Junior Championship 2025 Kicks Off in Bhutan

Thimphu, Bhutan – August 15, 2025 – A historic moment for Bhutanese sport unfolded today as the nation welcomed the Badminton Asia South Asia Regional Junior Championship 2025 for the very first time. The week-long tournament, running from August 15 to 22 at the Bhutan Badminton Federation Hall in Bebena, Thimphu, features 61 junior athletes from Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka competing for regional glory.

This year’s championship introduces the U23 category alongside U17 and U15 divisions, with matches in both singles and doubles. The U23 addition is a major step in bridging the gap between junior and senior levels, ensuring young players have a pathway to elite badminton.

Bhutan Serves Up History – Hosts Badminton Asia South Asia Regional Junior Championship 2025

The opening ceremony was a showcase of sporting unity, inaugurated by Lyonpo Yeezang De Thapa, Minister for Education and Skills Development. Dasho Thinley Wangchuk Dorji, President of the Bhutan Cricket Council Board, attended as Guest of Honour. They were joined by Mr. Thanabalan Arikshinam, Development Officer, and Mr. Sambethen Sivapuramal, Senior Development Manager from Badminton Asia, along with representatives from Bhutan’s sports federations and national agencies.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Kinley Tshering, General Secretary of the Bhutan Badminton Federation, called the event “another history in Bhutan’s sporting journey,” expressing gratitude to the Bhutan Olympic Committee and Badminton Asia for their guidance and collaboration, and acknowledging Victor Sports as the main sponsor.

With 28 homegrown athletes leading Bhutan’s charge, the championship promises a week of high-energy rallies, intense competition, and a celebration of youth talent — all set against the stunning Himalayan backdrop.
