Bhutan Tennis Federation Announces Participation in 2025
Billie Jean King Cup in Jordan

The Bhutan Tennis Federation (BTF) announces the participation of the BTF Women’s National Team in the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup, widely recognized as the World Cup of Tennis. The tournament will take place at King Hussein Sports City in Amman, Jordan, from 15th to 22nd June 2025.

This marks Bhutan’s third appearance at this prestigious international event. Notably, this year’s team is the youngest ever, a testament to the Federation’s long-term vision and investment in youth player development. Bhutan will compete in the Asia/Oceania Group III, alongside 16 other nations from the region.

Following BTF’s guidelines for international representation, the selection committee has fielded players who embody skill, discipline, and potential. The national squad includes:

Sonam Chuki Dorji, Lewis Clark State College

Lhasel and Yangkey are part of the BTF Junior Squad Program, training five days a week under a structured system aimed at long-term athletic and personal development. Sonam is currently pursuing her higher education and training under a tennis scholarship in the United States, competing at the collegiate level with Lewis-Clark State College.

In the buildup to the tournament, all three players have been undergoing intensive training—six days a week, four hours a day—under the guidance of Coach Ravi Shankar, a mentor coach with a distinguished global resume.

Joining the Federation in March 2025 with support from the Government of India (GOI) and the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC), Coach Ravi Shankar from Kolkata, India, brings with him over 35 years of international coaching experience. Having developed tennis programs and mentored athletes in Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, the Maldives, Bangladesh, and Shanghai, Coach Ravi now leads Bhutan’s national training strategy.

“With our enhanced coaching structure and a comprehensive training programme, our preparation for this year’s Billie Jean King Cup has been the strongest yet,” said Coach Tshering Namgay, Head Coach of the Bhutan national team. “This is a young and determined team that has progressed through our development pathway. They are ready for the challenge.”

The BTF sees the Billie Jean King Cup as more than just a tournament—it is a platform for values-based learning. These players are not only representing Bhutan but are also ambassadors of discipline, integrity, and self-motivation.

“This team is more than a group of athletes heading to a competition—it is a symbol of what’s possible when sport is nurtured with purpose,” said the Vice President of BTF. “We believe in developing better players, yes, but more importantly, better people.”

The Federation extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone making this journey possible:

  • Parents, for their unwavering support and belief in their children’s dreams.
  • Motithang Higher Secondary School, for enabling student-athletes to balance academics and sport.
  • The coaching team, for their tireless effort and dedication to growth.
  • The Bhutan Olympic Committee, for its continuous support and funding initiatives.
  • The Government of India, for facilitating the appointment of a world-class mentor coach.

Above all, a deep sense of appreciation goes to the players—Lhasel, Yangkey, and Sonam—whose commitment, resilience, and passion have earned them the right to wear Bhutan’s colors on the international stage.
