Bhutanese Teen Baseball Star Selected for
MLB China Summer League

In a remarkable achievement for Bhutanese sports, 17-year-old Thinley Jamtsho from Dechencholing Higher Secondary School has been selected to participate in the MLB China Development Center Summer League 2025, a major international platform for young baseball talent

Currently a Class 11 Arts student, Thinley began his baseball journey in 2021 when the Bhutan Baseball & Softball Association (BBSA) conducted its first annual U15 School League. Representing his school, he and his team were trained under BBSA coach Mrs. Tshering Zangmo. Thinley started out as a catcher, but during the league, his team’s pitcher sustained an injury. Coach Tshering entrusted Thinley with the role of pitcher — a moment that would change his sporting journey. From that point, he fell in love with pitching and was inspired to grow in the role, aspiring to become Bhutan’s first professional pitcher in the future.

“Thinley has shown remarkable growth since his early days in the U15 league,” said Sanjeevan Raj Gurung, General Secretary of the Bhutan Baseball & Softball Association. “His discipline and passion for the game earned him a spot in Bhutan’s first U18 National Team, where he now proudly serves as captain.”

His growth was further shaped by international coach Mervin Moore, who was with BBSA from 2022 to 2023. Coach Moore shared his extensive experience, helping Thinley develop into a more mature and technically sound pitcher. Beyond playing, Thinley has taken on a leadership role within his school, coaching and mentoring younger players in the U12 and U15 divisions at Dechencholing HSS, thus contributing to grassroots development.

In August 2024, Thinley was selected among 12 players for a historic tour to the USA, hosted by the Hudson Valley Renegades — a momentous opportunity for Bhutanese baseball players to gain international exposure. In January 2025, BBSA was honored to host Coach Paul Benoit, a professional coach with the St. Louis Cardinals’ Double-A affiliate, the Springfield Cardinals. Coach Paul conducted a two-week development camp for U18 baseball and softball players in Bhutan. Impressed by the dedication of players despite the lack of professional facilities, Coach Paul highlighted the talent pool Bhutan has to offer. He identified three players from the boys’ baseball team and one player from the girls’ softball team who have potential to play internationally. Among them, he specifically mentioned Thinley Jamtsho as “ready to play abroad,” and Tshering Yangdon from the girls’ team as having the potential to compete in university-level softball leagues.

To explore opportunities for Thinley, Coach Paul connected with Mr. Ramon Alex Riesgo, BBSA’s Head of International Relations and a volunteer employee, to identify potential overseas development pathways. Their initial outreach was made to Japan, where several academies and clubs showed interest. While there were some communication challenges, the BBSA team remains in good contact with Japanese partners for future possibilities.

Meanwhile, Ramon extended communications to MLB China, utilizing his contacts. The MLB China management and coaching team responded positively, requesting a pitching video of Thinley. After reviewing the footage, MLB China noted that Thinley has strong potential and mentioned that with improvement in his mechanics, he could become a more effective player. As a result, MLB China selected Thinley to participate in the MLB China Development Center Summer League 2025. Currently, Thinley is undergoing weekly strength and conditioning training under the supervision of BBSA coaches to prepare for this opportunity.
