Bhutan Emerges as a Premier Hub for High-Altitude Professional Training

High-Altitude Training Hub for Elite Swimmers

Something special happened in Thimphu this past month — something that’s placing Bhutan firmly on the map for international sports training.

The High Altitude Training Camp at the Thimphu Aquatics Centre, a joint initiative between the Bhutan Aquatics Federation and SAI Glenmark Swimming Academy, India, has not only concluded successfully but left a lasting impression on everyone involved.

What started as a technical camp quickly turned into something deeper — a powerful collaboration built on professionalism, kindness, and shared purpose. One of the standout voices from the visiting team, Vijay Bharadwaj from the Glenmark Foundation, summed it up best:

“I wanted to take a moment to sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart for the wonderful support and kindness you extended to us throughout the training camp at Thimphu Aquatics Centre. Your personal involvement and dedication truly made a huge difference. The swimmers and coaches had such a positive and memorable experience — it wouldn’t have been possible without the warmth and seamless coordination from the entire Bhutan Aquatics team.”

Bhutan is ready to host elite athletes, offering the perfect mix of high-altitude advantage, peaceful surroundings, and a deeply supportive community.

Thimphu’s unique geography provides the ideal setting for building endurance and pushing athletic limits. But what stood out most was the human connection. Coaches and athletes from both countries walked away not only with sharper skills but with new friendships and possibilities.

“We feel very fortunate to have had this opportunity to work closely with the Bhutan team. It has opened up so many possibilities for growth and learning — and we’re excited to build on this strong foundation.”

Plans are already in motion for the next chapter. A reputed international coach may be arriving in October, and Bhutanese coaches are being invited to join the upcoming program — a testament to how much faith this partnership has inspired.

The Glenmark team has also expressed their continued support, emphasizing their willingness to contribute however they can to help Bhutan Aquatics grow even further.

This successful training camp is more than just a one-off event — it’s a sign of where Bhutan is headed. With its growing reputation for hospitality, dedication, and professional sporting infrastructure, Bhutan is quietly becoming a go-to destination for high-performance training in South Asia.
