Dragon Fury Mountain Bike Race 2025 Concludes with Thrilling Finish in Thimphu
The roar of wheels, the spirit of endurance, and the breathtaking Himalayan backdrop all came together yesterday as the Dragon Fury Mountain Bike Race 2025 came to a spectacular close.
Seventy-four riders took on the unforgiving 70-kilometre course from Gadhen Lingka Park in Wangdue Phodrang to the iconic Clock Tower Square in Thimphu, testing not just their strength but their spirit.
The excitement began the day before, on September 5, when the Sha Festival lit up Gadhen Lingka Park. With cultural performances and traditional entertainment, it offered a warm Bhutanese welcome to riders from across the country and beyond.
Race day kicked off with a ceremonial flag-off by Health Minister, His Excellency Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk, and Mr. Sonam Karma Tshering, Secretary General of the Bhutan Olympic Committee. Dancers, musicians, and cheers from schoolchildren created an electric start line atmosphere as the riders rolled out.
From the youngest rider, just 9 years old, to the oldest at an inspiring 70 years, the race celebrated inclusivity and the true spirit of adventure.
By the time the peloton thundered into Clock Tower Square, Thimphu had transformed into a festival ground. The finish was graced by His Excellency Lyonpo Namgyal Dorji, Minister for Industry, Commerce and Employment, who awarded the top riders.
And the results did not disappoint.
In the Men’s Category, it was Sherab Gyeltshen who stole the show, clocking a blistering 2:49:42 to claim victory. Tashi Namgay followed at 2:55:55, while San Man Subba took third with 3:05:07.
The Women’s Category saw a strong international flavor with Reika Yoshii storming to the top spot in 3:32:23. Bhutan’s own Chimi Dema fought hard for second at 4:05:27, while Gladys Proudlock-Ang rounded out the podium in 4:22:31.
The race was organized by the Dzongkhag Administration of Wangdue Phodrang in partnership with the Bhutan Olympic Committee, and supported by the Department of Tourism and Yu-Druk Cycle Shop. Official partners included Tashi Beverages Limited (Coca-Cola Bhutan) as the Official Beverage Sponsor and Karma Groups as the Official First Aid Supply Partner.
The Dragon Fury lived up to its name — fierce, unrelenting, yet breathtakingly beautiful. With riders pushing their limits against mountains, valleys, and the Dragon’s own fury, the 2025 edition will be remembered as one of the most inspiring races to date.
