Are We Ready to Win?

By Victor Gurung, Chief of Media, Digital Innovation & Technical Solutions, Bhutan Olympic Committee

There was a moment, not long ago, when we watched her cross the finish line. Exhausted, breath ragged, legs trembling, but she crossed it. The crowd erupted. The medal hung heavy around her neck, and for a brief moment, our flag rose. Tears glistened in her eyes. And we cheered, proud, but also yearning.

That is the beauty of sport. The glory of participation. The proof that we can compete. And yet, deep inside, a question remains. Is that enough?

Because winning is something different. It is not just about being there. It is not just about making Bhutan proud for a day. Winning is about standing on the podium and refusing to be moved. It is about the fire that keeps burning when the body wants to give up. That fire is the difference between participation and triumph.

We have reached a point in Bhutanese sport where participation alone can no longer be our finishing line. We have stood on international stages, carried our flag with pride, and shown the world that Bhutan belongs there. But a deeper question now faces us. Are we preparing only to be present, or are we ready to build a culture that believes in winning, inspires our youth, and shows every child that one day the podium can be theirs too?

We have done much already. We have sent athletes to the world stage. We have trained harder, celebrated victories, and learned from defeats. But we must look honestly at ourselves. Do we truly believe we are here only to participate, or are we ready to fight for more?

There is another question that matters deeply. What will the next generation remember about us? What will the youth of Bhutan say when they look back? Will they say we were content to try, or that this was the generation that dared to believe Bhutan could win.

Our children are watching. They are stronger and more confident than we were, yet they are also fragile. They face pressure, comparison, and doubt. Our responsibility is to ignite the dream in them. To show them that the podium is not beyond Bhutan. It can be ours. Are we doing enough to light that belief, or are we quietly teaching them that participation is all we should hope for?

Imagine the roar of the crowd. Imagine standing on the podium, hearing the anthem, watching our flag rise. That moment carries every sacrifice, every early morning, every silent struggle.

The question is simple. Are we ready? Are we prepared to move beyond participation and step into winning?

History remembers those who rise. Winning does not come from talent alone. It comes from discipline, courage, belief, and the refusal to lower the bar. It comes from choosing to dream bigger for Bhutan.

Our athletes are training before sunrise. Our children are watching quietly, waiting to see what is possible.

We have done much. We are doing much. But we must ask ourselves, honestly. Is it enough? Or are we ready to win. Truly win.
