Beyond Medals
Where Sport Ends and Purpose Begins
In Bhutan, stories of success are often rooted in quiet perseverance rather than loud ambition. The journey of Sonam Youden, a BOC–RUB Scholarship recipient, is one such story—one that beautifully illustrates how sport, education, and opportunity can come together to shape a purposeful life.
Originally from Bartsham, Trashigang, Sonam Youden was raised in Phuentsholing from an early age, an environment that nurtured her curiosity, community spirit, and early love for sports. What began as a passion nurtured on local courts would later become a defining pillar of her academic and professional journey.
Discovering Opportunity Through Sport
Sonam first learned about the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) Scholarship not through brochures or advertisements, but through the sporting community itself. While actively playing table tennis, her coach and senior players introduced her to the scholarship—sharing firsthand how it had transformed their own lives.’
Inspired by these stories and motivated by the possibilities the scholarship offered, Sonam decided to apply. The process, as she recalls, was rigorous yet fair—an experience that evaluated not only her academic performance, but also her sporting achievements, values, and vision.
“What stood out to me was being asked how I intended to contribute to the advancement of sports in Bhutan. It made me realize that the scholarship was about giving back, not just receiving support.”
A Scholar, an Athlete, a Leader
Sonam went on to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture at the College of Science and Technology, fully supported by the BOC–RUB Scholarship. This financial backing allowed her to focus deeply on her studies while continuing her commitment to sport. Far from stepping away from table tennis, she became a driving force in promoting the game during her college years—frequently organizing tournaments and encouraging participation among fellow students. The scholarship, she says, didn’t just support her education; it motivated her to stay connected to sport and to lead by example.
Academically, architecture equipped her with strong foundations in design thinking, technical competence, and problem-solving skills that now define her professional identity.
Connection with the Bhutan Olympic Committee
Sonam’s association with the Bhutan Olympic Committee began early. In 2011, she attended her first winter coaching camp conducted by the Bhutan Table Tennis Federation—an experience that ignited a lifelong connection with organized sport.
Over the years, she trained consistently during school vacations, represented her school at national-level competitions, volunteered as a coach during winter training programs in Phuentsholing, and went on to represent her college in Bhutan University Sports Federation (BUSF) events, steadily strengthening her experience both as an athlete and a mentor.
Through each phase of her life, sport remained a constant—shaping her discipline, confidence, and sense of responsibility.

Gratitude
Sonam speaks with heartfelt gratitude for the institutions and individuals who supported her journey, extending her deepest thanks to the Bhutan Olympic Committee, the Bhutan Table Tennis Federation, Coach Dala for his unwavering mentorship, and her father for his constant guidance and belief. She credits their support for giving her the confidence to dream bigger, work harder, and remain committed to giving back to the sporting community.
A Message to the Next Generation
To aspiring students and athletes eyeing the BOC Scholarship, Sonam offers simple yet powerful advice:
“Develop yourself holistically. Be consistent in the sport you pursue. Academics matter, but dedication to sport builds discipline, resilience, and character that will carry you through life.”
A Story That Inspires Beyond the Scoreboard
Sonam Youden’s journey is a reminder that sport is not a distraction from success—it is often the foundation of it. From table tennis courts to urban planning offices, her story stands as a testament to what happens when opportunity meets commitment.
In nurturing athletes who excel both on and off the field, the BOC Scholarship continues to shape futures—and Sonam’s story is one that will inspire many more to follow.
Because sometimes, the most powerful victories aren’t won in stadiums—but in the lives built beyond them.
