HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck Grants Audience to Dechen Dorji and Members of the Bhutan Boxing Federation
His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck granted an audience to bronze medalist Dechen Dorji and members of the Bhutan Boxing Federation during a felicitation and congratulatory program. The event was attended by Goongloen Batoo Tshering, along with Federation President Brigadier Rinzin Dorji, Vice President Lieutenant Colonel Sangay Jamtsho, and General Secretary Captain Ngawang Tobgay.
During the program, His Royal Highness presented special cash awards and congratulatory certificates to athlete Dechen Dorji and coach Girchungla, recognizing their outstanding achievement. Dechen Dorji secured a bronze medal at the U22 & U19 Asian Boxing Championship 2025, held in Thailand from 30th July to 12th August 2025, while coach Girchungla was acknowledged for his invaluable guidance and support.
Addressing the gathering, His Royal Highness emphasized the importance of striving for excellence within Bhutan’s sporting community. He noted that, despite being a small nation, accomplishments like these showcase Bhutan’s growing potential and capability on the international stage.
His Royal Highness highlighted the significance of Bhutan’s achievement, particularly in defeating Chinese Taipei—a nation with a much larger population and more advanced economy. “Bhutan has truly punched above its weight, not only defeating a significantly larger country but also securing a medal on the international stage,” HRH stated. He emphasized that this victory has brought Bhutan considerable international recognition, which will be leveraged to further develop boxing and provide greater support to the nation’s athletes.
HRH expressed his heartfelt appreciation to Dechen Dorji, the other boxers, the Bhutan Boxing Federation, and the Royal Bhutan Army for their dedication and hard work. He affirmed that the Bhutan Olympic Committee and the Royal Bhutan Army will continue discussions to strengthen support for athletes and foster their development.
