14th Edition of Royal Wedding Anniversary Golf Tournament Begins Tomorrow
Bhutan Tees Up for Royal Celebration
The calm greens of Drakpoi Golf Course in Dechencholing are ready to echo with the sound of drives and putts as Bhutan’s most anticipated golf event — the 14th Edition of the Royal Wedding Anniversary Golf Tournament — tees off tomorrow, October 15.
Proudly sponsored by the Army Welfare Project, this annual tournament honours the Royal Wedding of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen, blending the grace of sport with the spirit of love, loyalty, and national pride.
First introduced in 2012, the Royal Wedding Anniversary Golf Tournament has grown into one of Bhutan’s premier sporting events, capturing both the tradition of the royal celebration and the growing enthusiasm for golf across the Kingdom.
This year’s edition has drawn a record 173 golfers, reflecting the sport’s steady rise in popularity. After three days of qualifying rounds, about 80 players will advance to the finals, competing under the stroke play format based on individual handicaps. Winners will take home cash prizes, a special Royal Wedding portrait, and the coveted Rolling Trophy. But for most, the true reward lies in the challenge, camaraderie, and the chance to play in honour of Their Majesties.
Beyond its ceremonial importance, the tournament has become a launchpad for Bhutanese golf talent. Many of Bhutan’s leading amateur golfers — including those who have gone on to represent the nation internationally — first made their mark in this very event.
“This event isn’t just about competition — it’s about community,” shared a senior Drakpoi Golf Club member. “Every year, we see young golfers gain confidence, learn discipline, and fall in love with the game. It’s where Bhutan’s golfing journey begins.”
